FAQs

Review our commonly asked questions below.

What does UPF 50 mean?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor — and 50 is the gold standard. A UPF 50 rating blocks 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, dramatically reducing your little one’s risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. It’s like SPF for clothing… minus the messy reapplication or worry about missing a spot.

Is this suit tested and certified?

Absolutely. Our fabric has been independently lab-tested and certified to meet the highest UPF 50 standards (ASTM/AATCC compliant).

What is the suit made from? Is it safe for babies?

Our suits are made from a buttery-soft blend of recycled nylon and elastane — designed for comfort, stretch, and safety. No harmful chemicals, no scratchy seams.  It’s breathable, quick-drying, and safe for delicate skin.

Is it eco-friendly?

Yes! We use recycled nylon to reduce waste and environmental impact.

Can my baby wear it in the water?

Yes, totally fine to wear in the water or get wet in a sprinkler, but this is product is not designed specifically as a swimsuit. It is a much thinner, more breathable fabric than those used in swimwear to allow for better breathability when dry.

Does my child still need to use sunscreen?

Yes — but less of it. This suit covers most of your baby’s body with UPF 50 protection, so just apply sunscreen to the exposed areas (face, hands, feet). Less slathering, less fuss, less drama.

What size should I get?

Our suits run slightly large, and they do tend to fit longer than the age range listed due to the flexible length of the hand and feet covers, which can convert to a couple extra inches of arm and leg length if they are not being folded over.  Check our sizing chart — and if you’re stuck, we’re happy to help.

How do I wash it?

Easy: machine wash cold, gentle cycle, hang to dry. Skip the fabric softener and bleach — they mess with the fibers and the sun protection. The suit is built for adventure but appreciates a little TLC.

How long does the UPF protection last?

The sun protection should last as long as the integrity of the fabric lasts. If you start to see wear in the actual fabric, thinning, or tears then it is time to replace the garment.

Is this suitable for babies with eczema or sensitive skin?

Yes! Our fabric is soft, breathable, and free of irritating tags and seams. I recommend washing in a fragrance free detergent like All Free & Clear and skipping any dryer sheets since fragrance in these products is a big source of eczema flares for those with sensitive skin.

What is UPF, and how is it different from SPF?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation a fabric allows to reach your skin. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98% of UV rays.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is used for sunscreens and only measures UVB protection — not UVA.

How effective is your clothing at blocking UV rays?

Extremely. Our suits are rated UPF 50, the highest protection category, blocking 98% of UVA and UVB rays. It’s full coverage you can trust — especially important for sensitive baby skin.

What UPF ratings do your products offer?

We only use UPF 50+ fabric.

What’s the difference between regular clothing and sun protective clothing?

Regular clothes might look like they’re covering skin — but many allow UV to pass through. The lighter the fabric and the looser the weave of the fibers, the more UV will go through it. For example, a white cotton T-shirt offers a UPF value of 5-8 (similar to SPF of 5-8), and even less if wet.

Sun protective clothing is specifically designed, constructed, and tested to block harmful rays.

How should I choose between sunscreen and sun protective clothing? Can I use sunscreen with your sun protective clothing?

Use both — strategically. Our suit protects most of the body with UPF 50 coverage, so you’ll just need sunscreen on the exposed areas (face, feet, hands). UPF clothing is generally more effective than sunscreen because it lets less UV through it, doesn’t wear off, and negates the need to worry about missing a spot. So when possible choose as much clothing coverage as is reasonable based on the activity and the temperature.

Are your clothes lightweight and breathable for hot weather?

Yes! Our fabric is lightweight, stretchy, and breathable, keeping your baby cool while staying sun-safe. That being said, babies (and especially really young infants) are more prone to overheating than adults. So it’s still important to avoid being out in high heat days with your little ones without shade and an easy way to cool off quickly if needed.

Is sun protective clothing necessary in cloudy or cooler weather?

Yes — UV rays still reach your skin on cloudy days (up to 80% of them sneak through). And cool temps don’t block UV at all. If it’s daylight, your baby still needs protection.

How is sun protective clothing beneficial for skin health?

UPF clothing helps prevent sunburn, long-term sun damage, and future skin cancer — especially important in early childhood when the skin is most vulnerable. One sunburn before age 18 doubles a child’s lifetime risk of melanoma.  It’s one of the most effective forms of passive, ongoing protection.
